Scientific research : Samanta started his research activities in 1978 in the area of theoretical Physics as a Research Fellow. This involved an extensive computational work. The computational work was done using Barroughs 6700 system installed at RCC, Jadavpur. Since then he gradually become interested to computers and computations field and ultimately switched to the area of Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems technology, Bio-medical problems, Medical Informatics, and Tea garden management. Paediatric Growth and Development (PGD) Samanta and his co-investigators have studied some problems with Paediatric growth and development for the region of North Bengal districts of India. They have found a significant growth retardation for fetal and child cases. They also have noted that the present region is lagging behind the 'standard' in terms of 'Environmental health'. It is suggested by these investigators that a constant monitoring is required for PGD of the region. Expert Systems Technology and its Societal Applications As an ideal situation, a paediatrician should be placed to each and every rural health centre. But, for a developing country like India, Paediatrician is a scarce commodity. To mitigate such expertise as well as to mitigate other potential problems, it is proposed that an automated consultation system within an expert system framework should be useful. A low-cost PC based portable consultation system is being proposed here. Currently, he and his co-investigators are engaged in developing such a system. On the other hand, they are also investigating the applicability of AI techniques in tea garden management. Potential technological issues are of interest such as rule-based reasoning, case-based reasoning, model-based reasoning, fuzzy knowledge base, artificial neural networks in connection with the development of such KBS/ES. Software Engineering Issues Software engineering, a relatively new and developing paradigm, deals with such methodologies, techniques, and tools so that one can develop quality systems with less time and costs. Perhaps this discipline has reached near to its adolescence but, however, it has still to attain its full maturity. New concepts and ideas from researchers and practitioners are being added to this discipline. Samanta and his co-workers are currently engaged to develop an expert system in the PGD domain and in tea garden management. Expert Systems development is the first and foremost software engineering. They are trying to contribute some new concepts and ideas from practitioners' point of view towards this discipline in the process of developing an expert system. Studies on the relative suitability of object technology, prototyping approach vs. phase-refinement approah, GUI approach, use CASE tools etc. are of interest. Medical Informatics and Web-based Technology ( CGI-Perl and BioPerl ) WWW and Internet technology have opened up a new avenue towards the knowledge elicitation. But, however, web-based knowledge elicitation has certain problems in general. Specially, we have to judge the quality of those knowledge before applying to it in the actual medical floor. We are pursuing different issues related to medical informatics in our laboratory. We are pursuing the development of Web-based decision support systems (DSS) using CGI-Perl. The applications of BioPerl are also of interest in Bioinformatics. AI and Expert Systems in Tea Garden Management Dr. Samanta and his co-workers are also investigating the application of Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems technology in Tea garden management. They have produced some results in this connection. Data Mining, Knowledge Discovery, and Soft Computing Dr. Samanta and his co-workers are also investigating the application of Data mining as well as Rough set theory and other Soft computing techniques in medical domain as well as in agricultural domain. They have also produced some results in this connection. |
